I was fortunate, nay privileged, to witness Karyn Steele whilst she cared for her terminally ill husband during his last few months. Although it was a very traumatic time for her, I was astonished at the way she managed to walk that fine line between compassion, tenderness and pragmatism. Her love for Peter was obvious in the way she cared for him when he was feeling lost and helpless but she never once tried to take his “agency” away from him and encouraged him to make any decisions that he felt empowered to make. I was there alongside Karyn a few minutes after Peter passed away. Her composure and grace under pressure was utterly humbling. Whilst her grief was palpable, it didn’t cloud her judgement. She went through that awful period with great dignity, even though she was clearly hurting inside. I am delighted to hear that she will be a Doula because her life experiences suit this role perfectly. She has walked the walk and has emerged with her dignity and sense of humour intact. She values life and respects death. This sort of role needs that level of understanding.

Having watched Karyn support her husband in his final weeks, then hours; Peter passed feeling the warmth of Karyn’s love and respect and his pain eased by her gentle care. Karyn’s compassion, respect and empathy for others are the perfect qualities for her to offer the service as a Doula.
